I did not even know the meaning of these points last year when I was preparing for CLAT (common law admission test) (Yes I had not read the 5 points someone of chetan bhagat at that time). It was only after taking clat, I came to know about point system,Thanks to 5 points someone. Even after reading the book I was not aware that point system applies in Law schools also. This year I have taken admission in Institute of law, Nirma university. They award points after the end of every semester. And thus students are known from their points instead of Percent or marks. I heard that topper of the academic year or my immediate senior scored 9.2 points. I felt really great as 5 points story flashed before my eyes. There was a kind of excitement, how these points are calculated and curiosity what point I would score? I asked Ashay about this system, he assured me that if one studies honestly then one can easily score 7 points or above. He himself had scored 8.2 point in 1st semster. I thought he is a topper to score 8.2. It actually felt good that my friend had scored so much good point. Nirma univerisyt has a 3 Terminal assessment exam, 1 mid semester and then finally session end exams. It is required to pass in all the subjects. If you maintain a good score throughout the year then it is not difficult to score good point at the end, even if you have screwed your end exams. It happened with me. I cannot work in pressure. Pressure creates tension and I fails to perform in pressurized situation. In my final exam of 1st semester, I was worried and tensed and left many questions in almost all the papers because of lack of time and tensions of mind. I was not expecting good marks. Results announced I scored A in 3 subjects (accountancy, Torts and English), B+ in Management (I could have scored more had i attempted full quetion paper) and B in Marketing (I deserved B only in Marketing, because learning 22 chapters from IIM book was almost impossible for me, and I somehow managed to understand the concepts and write it in my own language unlike the copy paste from the book as done my many of my colleagues). The criteria of calculating points is A+=10 A=9 B+=8 B=7. Now add the numbers of grades of 5 subjects and divide it by 5. My total was 42. 42 divided by 5 will give you 8.4. Now I can proudly say myself an 8 pointer as I have scored 8.4. But I did not like this grading system, because it does not show the real worth of a person. A person scoring 89 would be ranked at par with a person who score 80. A student would not be motivated to score more because he is measured at par with others. And this system has many flaws. I myself have experienced that teachers can grant grade biasly. Because many of my friends who were good students in studies declared IF(interim failed) and Myself who could not attempt tort paper of 12 marks has got an A grade in Torts which is impossible. It is true that my score all over the year was very good in tort but does it mean that I performed well in finals too?
